Bok in Bloom!
Camellias in Bloom

Azaleas in Bloom

Be dazzled by seasonal bursts of color from 150 varieties of camellias and hundreds of azaleas along with nun’s orchids, salvias, irises and other blooms.

Best-of-Class Trial Garden—mid-January through April
Enjoy the unusual and colorful blooms of new cultivars developed by seed companies around the world. The Sanctuary is one of several premier gardens participating in this partnership with the University of Florida's Gulf Coast & Education Center in Wimauma.

Watercolor Class—12-week courses
Thursdays, January 26-April 13
Alice Behrle, Artist
12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
— In the beginner to intermediate class, learn step-by-step basic watercolor techniques and the elements of design. No previous experience required.
1:30 to 4:30 p.m. — The intermediate to advanced class will explore new watercolor techniques, strengthen drawing skills and inspire creativity. For more information 863.676.1408, ext. 2216. Each class: Limit 16; $192 or $156 members.

Moonlight Carillon Concerts
March 11 — 8 p.m.
April 11 — 8 p.m.
Enjoy the enchanting sounds of the carillon and thrill to the spectacle of nature from the highest point on peninsular Florida: the setting sun, the rising moon, twinkling stars, subtle lighting from within the tower and flambeaux guiding you along the way. After 5 p.m., admission is $4 adults and $1.50 children 5-12. Members and children under 5 admitted free.

Valentine's Day Carillon Concert
February 14 — 1 and 3 p.m.
Bells ring in romance on Valentine’s Day from the majestic Singing Tower with some traditional romantic favorites.

Tree Climbing for the Whole Family
February 18
Come hang out at the Sanctuary from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
A fun activity for the whole family at the Sanctuary! Learn about trees and bask in the rewards of accomplishing a tall task. Tree Climbing is an international sport led by qualified trainers. Before climbing, an appropriate tree is chosen and prepared by an arborist. Then, instructors loop ropes over tree branches at various heights while participants gear up in harnesses and helmets. Using simple equipment to scale the rope, participants can sit comfortably in the harness if they need a climbing break. Once aloft, climbers can stop at various branches to study the environment or lay down in a tree hammock while safely dangling up to 40 feet above the ground. Sunrise Azalea Walk and Breakfast with the Birds

Awaken your senses during a contemplative walk through the Sanctuary’s Olmsted-designed gardens. Experience the blazing azaleas in the height of their bloom, the sunrise heralded by the woodland birds and the glistening dewdrops on an orb weaver’s web. Landscaping a Small Lot : To Sod or Not to Sod?
March 4 — 10 a.m. to noon

Whether you’re contemplating updating your existing landscape or starting from the beginning, planning is fundamental to achieving a good landscape design. Learn what plants will grow and look their best in a variety of landscape areas, such as planting beds and walkways, fencing vs. hedging, straight vs. curved and more. Off the Beaten Path: Azalea Celebrations

Ravine State Gardens in Palatka and Washington Oaks Gardens State Park east of Palatka on A1A are both well known for their azaleas, camellias and roses. They are probably two of Florida ’s best-kept secrets! A steep ravine created by water flowing beneath the sandy ridges that flank the west shore of the St. Johns River grew into an unusual habitat. It features mature mixed hardwoods with a garden of azaleas, camellias and other plant varieties created more than 75 years ago. Straddling the land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intercoastal Waterway, the hammock contains a formal garden where many species of exotic plants from around the world are displayed. Journaling with Award-Winning Writer Herb Hiller

Herb Hiller, Journalist and Author
Herb Hiller, who more than 40 years has been an innovative force in the development of tourism in Florida and the Caribbean, comes with a diverse background as a travel writer, editor, lecturer and strategic planner. He will talk about journaling to capture ideas, stimulate the mind and to draft letters, reports and stories. He will also talk about accessory instruments, such as microcassette recorders and reporter notebooks, as well as how traveling with these helpful tools can become a “best friend” like a dog or companion. Founder’s Room Tour

Sustainer Level ($75) and above members can tour the Singing Tower’s first floor known as the Founder’s Room, and discover the works of some of America’s finest artisans. See the amazing sculptural details of Lee Lawrie, the stunning tile floor mural created by J.H. Dulles Allen and the magnificent wrought iron creations of Samuel Yellin which include the great brass door. Groups will also be treated to a complimentary continental breakfast in the Visitor Center Lecture Halls. Each tour is limited to 50 members, so make your reservations early. St. Patrick's Day Carillon Concert

Become Irish on St. Patrick’s Day and enjoy special carillon music featuring lively Irish melodies.

Young Naturalist Day Camp
March 28-30 — 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Grades 3 through 5

Students will be inspired by opportunities to learn more about the natural world and themselves while being immersed in a positive and fully engaged learning community! Daily sessions include courses designed to build community, enhance knowledge of the natural world, develop leadership skills and foster a sense of well-being. Bring your own snacks and lunches. Wildlife Safari: Green Swamp
April 1 — 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The liquid heart of Florida is the 560,000 acre Green Swamp . It’s the state’s second-largest wetlands system and covers portions of Polk, Lake , Sumter, Pasco and Hernando counties. It provides underground pressure to a multitude of free-flowing springs, and the water supply for a majority of Florida ’s population. The Green Swamp provides an invaluable wildlife habitat and is home to more than 330 wildlife species, including threatened and endangered species. It’s also a designated Important Bird Area. Learn more about the Green Swamp and be inspired to help protect it. Walk some of its forested paths to discover exceptional wildflowers. Includes moderate walking and car-pooling. Spring Container Garden Class

Spring is in the air. In this hands-on workshop, you will create a one-of-a-kind miniature spring container garden. Learn how to select quality plants that maintain color and will re-bloom. Acoustic Eidolon

80th Annual Easter Sunrise Service
April 16 — 7 a.m.
Easter morning worshippers are invited to greet the dawn of this special day. Join us atop peninsular Florida's highest point as the sunrise is heralded with the music of a 60-bell carillon, brass ensemble and the Lake Wales Chorale. Admission is complimentary from 6 to 8 a.m. Enjoy a delicious Easter buffet in the Carillon Café for only $7.95.

Enjoy joyous and triumphal selections performed on the Singing Tower’s bronze bells while strolling through the serene beauty of the gardens during abundant spring bloom.

Making Music: Drums as a Language & Music in Motion
April 29 — 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Families can learn and play together while making memories that can be treasured for years to come! Play with African, Afro-Cuban and Native American drums, and learn how they are used as a method of communication. Many percussion instruments are demonstrated. Find your own percussion voice and learn to communicate as part of a team. Share the music inside you as you increase appreciation, confidence and fun! Create your own instruments to take home. Concert Under The Stars
Imperial Symphony Orchestra
May 6 - 8 p.m.
Spend an enchanted evening under the majestic, moss-covered oak trees at the 16th Annual Concert Under the Stars featuring the Imperial Symphony Orchestra. This event is an annual favorite outdoor gathering for Central Floridians. Visitors are encouraged to come early to enjoy the beautiful historic landscape gardens and family-friendly activities. Advance ticket prices are $10 adults and $5 children 5-12. Day of performance tickets are $12 adults and $6 children 5-12. Children under 5 admitted free.

Mother’s Day Concert and Reception
May 14 - 4 to 6 p.m.

Honor your mother, wife, grandmother or someone else on this special day. Treat her to a romantic concert held at historic Pinewood Estate’s intimate setting. Start your visit with a docent-led tour of the Mediterranean Revival Mansion and end it with a reception of delectable sweets and sparkling cider. This is a concert the whole family will enjoy. SINGING TOWER

Housed in a majestic marble and coquina tower, the 60-bell Taylor carillon provides visitors with delightful music throughout the day. Daily carillon concerts are at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Carillon clock music plays at 9 a.m. and every half-hour following.

PINEWOOD ESTATE

Explore Pinewood Estate’s beautiful gardens and 20-room mansion built in the early 1930s. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is considered one of the finest examples of Mediterranean Revival architecture in Florida. 

General Pinewood tour prices and hours:
Monday-Saturday, 11:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m.,
2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Sunday 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
$5 for adults; $3 for members and children ages 5-12. Children under five may tour for free.

Tours are limited to 15 and require an additional ticket. Upon arrival, check tour schedule and availability in the Visitor Center.

ART EXHIBITS

Interpretations of the uniqueness and natural beauty of Florida’s flora, fauna, landscapes and architecture are showcased in the Visitor Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Viewing the exhibits and lectures are included with general Sanctuary admission and for members.

Observing, raising and portraying birds have been a major part of Diane’s life. “I’m very serious about my field work. It’s more than just a portrait of the bird. I like to tell a story about it, including its natural surroundings.”

"Within the Hammock II" Art Exhibit

Peter Powell Roberts of Zolfo Springs
Roberts combines non-representational forms with natural ones to encourage the viewer to look beyond the obvious. These forms express a reverence for life, the perception of nature and the spirit of abstraction.
